Accessibility
Reading Is For Everyone.
Accessibility is not a feature we added. It is the reason BookBridge exists. Every design decision, every interface choice, every format we support — all of it starts with the question: can every reader use this?
Our Commitment
We Build For The Reader First.
One in five people in the UK has a reading difficulty, visual impairment, or condition that makes standard text hard to engage with. Globally, that number is hundreds of millions. Yet most reading platforms treat accessibility as an afterthought — a settings menu buried three taps deep.
BookBridge is built the other way around. We design for the reader who needs the most support, and everyone benefits. High contrast, flexible typography, screen reader compatibility, and AI narration are not premium add-ons. They are the foundation.
We are committed to meeting and exceeding WCAG 2.2 AA standards across every surface of the product — and to going further wherever the standard falls short of real reader needs.
Design Principles
Perceivable
All content is available in multiple formats. Text can be read aloud. Images carry meaningful descriptions. Colour is never the only way information is conveyed.
Operable
Every feature is reachable by keyboard. Focus indicators are always visible. No interaction requires a mouse, a precise tap, or a time limit.
Understandable
Language is plain and consistent. Error messages explain what went wrong and how to fix it. Navigation behaves predictably on every page.
Robust
BookBridge works with the assistive technologies readers already use — screen readers, switch access, voice control, and magnification software.
Built-In, Not Bolted On.
These are not settings. They are defaults.
Screen Reader Support
Full ARIA landmark structure, meaningful alt text, and live region announcements throughout the reading experience.
Dyslexia-Friendly Fonts
Switch to OpenDyslexic or other reader-optimised typefaces with a single tap — no account settings required.
Adjustable Typography
Font size, line height, letter spacing, and paragraph width are all reader-controlled. Your preferences sync across devices.
High Contrast Modes
Multiple contrast themes including dark mode, sepia, and high-contrast white — all tested against WCAG 1.4.3.
AI Narration
Every book in the library can be listened to, even titles without a professional audiobook. Natural-sounding AI voices with adjustable speed.
Keyboard Navigation
Every action in BookBridge is reachable by keyboard. Tab order is logical. Shortcuts are documented and customisable.
Standards
WCAG 2.2 AA — Our Baseline, Not Our Ceiling.
We audit against WCAG 2.2 AA before every release. Where the standard does not go far enough for real reader needs — particularly around cognitive accessibility and reading-specific interactions — we apply our own higher bar. Accessibility reports are published with each major release.
Found A Barrier?
If you encounter anything in BookBridge that creates a barrier to reading, we want to know. Accessibility feedback is treated as a critical issue — not a feature request.
